Carbon Leakage (CBAM)
Adopted to adjust potential economic imbalances on imports of iron, steel, cement, aluminum, electricity, fertilizers, or hydrogen for trade in the EU – the CBAM.
The Carbon Boarder Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) introduces a gradual price on certain emission-intensive goods imported into the EU from third countries. Companies in the EU that import iron, steel, cement, aluminum, electricity, fertilizers, or hydrogen in pure or processed form from non-EU countries will need to report separately on all imports on a quarterly basis starting 1 October 2023. The pricing will be based on the purchase of CBAM certificates and aims to offset potential competitive disadvantages for goods produced within the EU.
During a transitional phase from October 2023 to the end of 2025, no certificates will be required for purchase. However, EU companies will need to report on their imported CBAM goods and their direct and indirect emissions starting in 2024.
