CBR Sustainability Partners has conducted a concept study on scalable SAF infrastructure in Baden-Württemberg

CBR Sustainability Partners is pleased to present a concept study developed as part of the refuels-Infra project, focusing on the development of a scalable infrastructure for kerosene fractions in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The study was conducted in close cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the MiRO refinery and was funded by the Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg. It provides a comprehensive analysis of how a scalable infrastructure for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Baden-Württemberg could be achieved.

Objectives of the study:

The primary objective of the study was to develop viable logistics concepts for the storage, blending and distribution of Methanol-to-Jet SAF in Baden-Württemberg. A key focus was ensuring scalability from an initial volume of 40 kt per year up to 200 kt per year by 2050.

In addition, the study addresses: the integration of key regulatory frameworks, including RED III and ReFuelEU Aviation, quality assurance requirements based on established standards such as ASTM, as well as sustainability certification schemes including ISCC and RSB.

Key Focus Areas:

The study is structured around four interlinked workstreams, covering the full SAF value chain:

    • Analysis of existing logistics concepts, including storage, blending and transport
    • Development of quality assurance and certification approaches for SAF blends
    • Assessment of limiting factors and definition of realistic scaling scenarios
    • Economic and environmental evaluation of logistics concepts, including flexible mechanisms such as book & claim
